E is for Egret

The letter is E for EGRET

grupakombinat.pl

A tall, slender, elegant and communal water bird, cousin to the Heron.

Prolific in North America, the Egrets nest together ..
.

go dancing...

......even ballet mid-air

A lovely poem by Judith Wright, who was a prolific Australian poet, short story writer and environmental activist.

Once as I traveled through a quiet evening,
I saw a pool, jet-black and mirror-still.
Beyond, the slender paperbarks stood crowding;
each on its own white image looked its fill,
and nothing moved but thirty egrets wading -
thirty egrets in a quiet evening.

Once in a lifetime, lovely past believing,
your lucky eyes may light on such a pool.
As though for many years I had been waiting,
I watched in silence, till my heart was full
of clear dark water, and white trees unmoving,
and, whiter yet, those thirty egrets wading.

Here is where you can find out all the things there are to know about the Egret's habits,
its domiciles, its ancestory,  relatives and other interesting things.

And here is where you can visit ABC Wednesday
where there are many other takes on the letter E
with thanks to Denise, Roger and their ever-loving helpers.

The Great White Egret is just beginning to become known in the UK. It's smaller cousin, the Little Egret began this process about 25 years ago and is now frequently seen throughout Southern Britain. All the result of global warming, probably. The Little Egret used to be shot for its plumes (long feathers on its head) and this practice was the reason that a number of ladies got together to protest about it. In time this led to the founding of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

John, looking through Wikipedia I found that people were excited about the discovery of the Great White Egret in the U.K. and were watching with anticipation the hatching of the eggs. Just one pair I think. This was probably written a couple of years ago. I can understand, unfortunately, the attraction of the plumes - they would rival the peacock's tail. Good for the ladies, and thank you for that information.

I love egrets Hildred. We have grey herons on our beck and last year we saw one little egret - it was so exciting. They are beginning to come into the south of the UK but have not reached here in any number yet.

My favorite bird -- I would love to see that many together! We do see them on both sides of this country. The pictures and the poem are wonderful. (Later this week I will have some egret pictures, not nearly as good. Nor of course will be the words)

A beautiful poem, what wonder the poet conjurers. I got quite excited when I saw just one that had somehow made its way to the north of England.
