Gratitude is the heart's memory

A moment in time - another birthday

You go a long and lovely journey,
For all the stars, like burning dew,
Are luminous and luring footprints
Of souls adventurous as you.

Oh, if you lived on earth elated,
How is it now that you can run
Free of the weight of flesh and faring
Far past the birthplace of the sun?

The letter is E for EGRET

A tall, slender, elegant and communal water bird, cousin to the Heron.

Prolific in North America, the Egrets nest together ..

A lovely poem by Judith Wright, who was a prolific Australian poet, short story writer and environmental activist.

Once as I traveled through a quiet evening,
I saw a pool, jet-black and mirror-still.
Beyond, the slender paperbarks stood crowding;
each on its own white image looked its fill,
and nothing moved but thirty egrets wading -
thirty egrets in a quiet evening.

Once in a lifetime, lovely past believing,
your lucky eyes may light on such a pool.
As though for many years I had been waiting,
I watched in silence, till my heart was full
of clear dark water, and white trees unmoving,
and, whiter yet, those thirty egrets wading.

Here is where you can find out all the things there are to know about the Egret's habits,
its domiciles, its ancestory,  relatives and other interesting things.

And here is where you can visit ABC Wednesday
where there are many other takes on the letter E
with thanks to Denise, Roger and their ever-loving helpers.
