The letter is E for Sir Alfred East
Sir Alfred East was born on the 15th of December 1844 in Kettering, Northamptonshire. He studed at the Glasgow School of Art but was in his late thirties when he left the family shoe making business for the precarious calling of professional artist.
For the next thirty years he immortalized the rich landscape of Britain,
and was known as a 'lyrical' painter.
The Reedy Mere and Sunlit Hills
His romantic landscapes show the influence of the Barbizon school and in 1906 he published a book, "The Art of Landscape Painting in Oil Colour".
The Lonely Road
An Autumn Afterglow
Alfred East achieved honours worldwide.
He was awarded a knighthood in 1910 by King Edward V11,
I would love to have the Reedy Mere and Sunlit Hills hanging in my home!!!

I had not heard of him before, but I do love his work! Almost what you can get with camera and photo-shop these days.

Lovely images!
Ihad not heard of him before this Hildred, but I must say there is something very restful about his work which I like very much.
I don't know him nor his work but he sure did know how to handle a brush
Have a nice ABC-W-day / - week

Thanks for showing these wonderful paintings. They are more real than life itself. He rightfully earned a knighthood!
I'd never heard of him so looked on artuk.org to see if I had seen any of his painting and not known (no!)but I surprisingly found a painting of his of Newby Bridge which I pass regularly, the only change to the bridge is today it has tarmac on it. He paints weather so well.
very skilled artist

Oh so lovely. I wish I had that talent. I love the landscapes so much.
The first one is my favorite as well Hildred! I love places like that. It reminds me of the Lake where we used to live here in Oregon -- but a more romantic (lyrical) version of it.
Excellent landscape painter. My father had prints of his,
as father was very good at landscape painting,
Best wishes,
Di.
