ABC Wednesday

The letter is M

M is for Lucy Maude Montgomery  (1874-19420

Have you read Anne of Green Gables?

If you haven't read this famous book, followed by its wonderful sequence
Anne of Avonlea
Chronicles of Avonlea
Anne of the Island
Further Chronicles of Avonlea
Anne's House of Dreams
Anne of Windy Poplars
Anne of Ingleside

then surely you have heard of it.....

"Matthew Cuthbert has gone to the train station to pick up the little boy he and his kind-hearted sister, Marilla Cuthbert, owners of Green Gables farm, adopted from the Halifax orphanage.  But what he finds is a precocious little red-haired girl named Anne Shirley, with a cheery disposition and some profound thoughts to share.  Anne soon became best friends with Diana Wright, and although Gilbert Blythe can be a pest at times, he too becomes a loyal friend.  Anne wins the hearts of many and has continued to attract readers of all ages and touch the hearts of millions of fans world-wide.

The story of Anne, of Green Gables and of Prince Edward Island is heart warming.

Lucy Maude Montgomery used the home of her grandparents, where she lived as a child
as a model for 'Green Gables", and it still continues to attract tourist from all over the world who yearn to see the country that Anne drew their hearts to.

When I visited P.E.I. some thirty years ago, researching the marketing of lambs, I was so entranced with the country side, the sea, the red earth, the potato crops, lobster dinners and the wonderful bed and breakfast where we stayed I wanted immediately to phone Charles and say, "Pack up and come quickly!!!"

Lucy Maude Montgomery also wrote poetry...

Come, rest awhile and let us idly stray
in glimmering valley, cool and far away.

Come from the greedy mart, the troubled street
and listen to the music, faint and sweet.

That echoes ever to a listening ear
Unheard by those who will not pause to hear.

The wayward chimes of memory's pensive bells,
Wind-blown o'er misty hills and curtained dells.

One step aside and dewy buds unclose
The sweetness of the violet and the rose.

Song and romance still linger in the green,
Emblossomed ways by you so seldom seen,

And near at hand, would you but see them, lie
All lovely things beloved in days gone by.

You have forgotten what it is to smile
in your too busy life.  Come rest awhile.

Sentimental, but appealing......

A most enjoyable post - thank you. And, it may be sentimental but "Come from the greedy mart, the troubled street and listen to the music, faint and sweet" must surely strike a chord with most of us nowadays.

Although I did not read the series of books, I was totally enthralled with the PBS series. And, I too, found myself drawn to PEI. Great post!

You have made me happy with this post, because I loved the books about Anne with an "e" ! I read Anne of Green Gables with my English class and showed the group the movie in the last lesson of the course.
Have a great week!

Very informative and the author looks exactly the way the inventor of 'Ann' should look!

An enduring classic.
I had a series of the Anne books that were bought in PEI when we visited when I was young (in the '60s) and I wanted to give them to my niece, but she was disappointed that the cover showed a different Ann than the one she was used to seeing. If it wasn't Megan Follows, it was just wrong, in her view!

oops, how could I forget to type the 'e'.
sorry Anne with an e.

I have never read the books but have seen TV adaptations of the story and love it. I feel inspired to read them now.

The poem is lovely too. Thank you for this. A x

Hildred,
As a lover of LMM's writing, have you read the several volumes of her journals? The first one--which incorporates her teenage years, is a bit flowery, but as they follow the years through her college and early teaching career, as well as several romantic interests, the writing becomes more complex. Some of the later journal entries are emotionally difficult to read as the difficulties of her marriage and life as a pastor's wife are chronicled.
I've also read several interesting books of a biographical nature which explore LMM's life and writing, including one which explores the premise that in later years she was journaling--and self-editing--in expectation that these private and personal thoughts would someday be published.

I can't believe I have never read these books. They are so well known and so many TV versions are available. I think growing up in England they were just not so well known over there. Very similar books in England were the "Dimsie" books, which I loved.

Read the first three of those as a little girl and now I want to read/re-read the whole series -- I wonder if they're on Kindle? I will check. We have neighbors from PEI here at our resort -- I would so love to visit there -- from them (and remembering the books)..and now your post. So many places .....

Anne of Green Gables has been one of my favorite book series for many years.
I devoured Montgomery's works and truly loved the PBS series too.
It made me want to visit Prince Edward Island, which I still wish I could.
