Poppies

May 24th, 2019

The Poppies are back!!!!

This little quote from Keats

catches the gayiety of the flower

as it dances in the breeze

and yet the Poppy, in our culture,

is so remindful of

grief, and sorrow and loss,

so much the result of

 bravery, and valour.

Perhaps that's why we love them so.

When we visited Charles' brother's graves in France

outside the cemetery the poppies

grew wild in the meadows.

Here in our garden

they grew amongst the flax and the iris

and were a constant reminder

of the beauty that we who lived

have been privileged to wonder at.

Praise what comes!!!!

So beautiful Hildred - I always think that the garden variety is 'blowsy' by comparison with the simple field poppy. Are those cornflowers in your photograph? They are one of my favourites - such a beautiful blue.

Your flowers are beautiful! Poppies are so special, always such a joy to see as they're so fragile and are gone so soon. Here in central Pennsylvania our garden poppies are huge and blooming along with purple and white irises, and being just about choked out by the biggest greenest thrivingest weeds! Woe is me - I can't do anything about it.

Red crepe paper poppies were a fixture of Memorial Day when I was a child. My Dad took us to the local parade complete with a stalwart veteran on horseback at the head, a marching band, troupes of Boy Scouts and Brownies. The Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion post trudged the sidewalks selling the paper poppies for a few pennies. My Dad always bought one for each of us to wear.
