A few quips, quotes and examples

Ostentatious simplicity is sophisticated hypocrisy

I don't know who said this, but I think it is quite true

If you must tattoo be elaborate !!!!!

How not to be ostentatious in literature

Advice from T.S. Eliot

My dear, how vulgar!

and slightly ridiculous!!!

Which probably brings one to this conclusion.....

Such great examples of the word ostentatious.
Oh my...that hat!!!

I can hear my Victorian grandmother sneering that word when describing a certain neighbor 'lady' whom I remember with dislike. So to me 'ostentatious' is very close to a curse word. (The pictures you show are kind of funny (that hat!) but the woman I remember wore a big fur coat with a collar made of animals (minks?) hanging head down ... I was afraid of them and of her. There are other equally vulgar family stories about that woman....

I really do hope I've found the golden medium between my prim and proper grandmother and that ostentatious woman -- neither one was an ideal role model really!

When I read this word ostentatious, I always think of Hyacinth Bucket or mrs. Bouquet, the Lady of the House, in " Keeping up appearances".
Good word Hildred.

Great post! Even with the example, I still don't get ostentatious simplicity. Could that be a photo or painting that's blank?
