ABC Wednesday

M is for Mandolin

A mandolin is a musical instrument in the lute family (plucked, or strummed). It is descended from the mandore, a soprano member of the lute family. It has a body with a teardrop-shaped soundboard, or one which is essentially oval in shape, with a soundhole, or soundholes, of varying shapes which are open and are not decorated with an intricately carved grille like the Baroque era mandolins.[from Wikipedia)

A great instrument for Blue Grass music...

Give a listen to 'Whiskey before Breakfast' and set your toes a-tapping....

For more great M's visit ABC Wednesday here. with thanks to Mrs. Nesbitt.

I will stick to my whiskey after dinner, otherwise I think I will get in great trouble!
Great choice for M though and the music was really nice. I am jealous, because I would love to be able to play an instrument like that!

Lovely post! We don't hear the mandolin as much as we might.

I like it's bell-like sound. Do you play, Hildred?

Great music. My Daughter in Law's Dad is 89 and has played the mandolin by ear for most of his life. Its a real treat to hear him play.
Thanks for the nice post.

I love the mandolin. Can't PLAY it, mind you; just listen.

there's a Rod Stewart song called Mandolin Wind that comes to mind.

Mara and Tumblewords, - I think it would be lovely to have an instrument to strum on, too. Much more relaxing than the piano, which is all I play, Barb. (Except for the organ) It is great to hear of people who are not so young anymore still enjoying the mandolin. Thanks so much for visits.
