The letter is M for Messenger

A Mindful poem from Mary Oliver

My work is loving the world,
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird -
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old?  Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be
The phoebe, the delphinium,
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture,
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all ingredients are here,

which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart
and these body-clothes,
a mouth with which to give shouts of joy
to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over how it is
that we live forever.

I am sorry I cannot read the signature on the watercolour of the Sunflower
and the Hummingbird, but I think it is very beautiful,
and I thank the painter....

It IS very beautiful and could not be a more appropriate illustration to Mary Oliver's beautiful poem. I fall more and more in love with her poetry on these days when I need to be reminded often that the world is a beautiful place. And that it is not my job to worry constantly.

Sallie - it's a lesson that takes a long time to learn - in the last few years I have become better at the practice of more appreciation, less worry..... when you finally realize that your life can fall apart but the earth-world goes on as beautiful as ever.
