ABC Wednesday

The letter this week is zig-zagging Z

Z stands for Zither

The Zither is a musical stringed instrument, most commonly found in Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, northwestern Croatia, the southern regions of Germany, alpine Europe and regions of southern Asia, including China.

In modern entertainment the zither is most famous for its use in the film, The Third Man where Anton Karas composed and played this familiar theme.

And here he plays it again for your enjoyment.....

For more takes on the letter Z (z)lither on over to ABC Wednesday here with thanks to all those who participate and those who organize this long-standing meme.  Who's for A again!

I always thought that was the sound of a mandolin. Can I blame being blonde?

Thank you so much for this video and the information about the zither. "The Third Man"was one of the best movies at the time. Orson Welles was still very young!
Very great post as always!

Zither! Love that. I am so happy I stumbled upon your site. I first noticed you like Scott Joplin who is also a favorite of mine -- then listened to the Michael Kaeshammer video which was positively riveting. Great!

So THAT's what a zither is supposed to sound like. and Such a fancy one with the keyboard attached. What a delight . We got one for my grandson. My daughter still plays hers also. Thank you so much for this wonderful entry.

I love the sound that zithers make. Doesn't it seem like they all look the same or is it that I haven't seen that many of them?

Anyway, C U in 7!

Two zither posts so far! The sound reminds me a little of traditional Hawaiian music.

A film I have watched many times and the music is perfect. I love the sound of the zither and it always brings back memories of a holiday in Romania where one was played in the local bar.
