ABC Wednesday

The letter this week is P

P is for Pigeons

These beautiful pictures taken in Venice, Piazza San Marco and kindly made available by  alastair@picturesofvenice.net

A relative of the dove, pigeons are a graceful bird, but by their vast numbers and their affinity for cities they are often classified as a nuisance.  Welcome, and fun to feed, but a terror to clean up after......

Wikipedia has an interesting article on pigeons and doves here and has much to say about the birds that have been lost in modern times, - the Passenger Pigeon and the Dodo -

Occasionally we see a flock of Homing Pigeons, - a lovely sight as they circle the valley and then return to the cote maintained by a neighbour.
For more interesting P's fly over to ABC Wednesday, with thanks to Mrs. Nesbitt and her kind helpers.

Not fond of pigeons and their pesty and messiness. Interesting information though and the picture of the bird in landing mode is good.

Pigeon feathers have the most delightful iridescent quality. Lovely shots!

pigeons are not PREFERRED by most city dwellers - I think they would rather, in the words of Tom Lehrer - be Poisoning Pigeons in the Park - but they don't usually bother me.

Great shots.

The 2nd photo of the pigeon is remarkable showing its true colors. Thank you for sharing these. Mom still has pigeons on the farm and a meal of squab is quite a rare treat.
On looking back at previous entries, I cannot get over the graceful eagle trying to steal from the osprey. We have both marvels here in north central Wisconsin and I would treasure such a sight.
Thanks for visiting. Do come again.

City folks don't like pigeons - they call them 'winged rats' and indeed some of them look very manky indeed. These pigeons in Venice look beautiful though, rather like the stock doves and wood pigeons we see in our garden - beautiful colours.

My husband is not too happy with pigeons right now! They land in large groups on the top of his building and make a mess.
These are quite lovely!
